Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Specified Risk Material.

Question:

103 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of BSE positive animals in frozen storage; the amount of specified risk material in frozen storage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14074/01]

There are currently 87 BSE positive carcasses in frozen storage.

The bulk of specified risk material, SRM, currently in frozen storage originates from animals destroyed under the purchase for destruction – PFD – scheme established by Commission Regulation 2777/2000. Freezing and storage of PFD SRM took place from 21 January to 13 April 2001, from which date sufficient rendering capacity became available for immediate rendering of SRM from animals slaughtered under the PFD scheme. The amount currently in storage is 6,700 tonnes.

There is also a small amount of specified risk material in frozen storage due to the identification of a BSE positive animal in the course of the over 30 month screening test for animals in a slaughter plant.
