Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Foot and Mouth Disease.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

120 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if plans are under way at his Department to review the overall handling of the foot and mouth crisis; if he plans to publish a report on same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14063/01]

At the moment, the focus must remain on the fight to prevent the introduction of the foot and mouth disease into this country. In the light of developments, restrictions introduced in the context of the single disease outbreak are being lifted in a phased and controlled way and we are working towards the re-establishment of our FMD disease free status for trade purposes. In due course, the overall response to the FMD crisis will be reviewed.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

121 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to the serious situation that has arisen due to the foot and mouth restrictions at the Cavan Equestrian Centre; the serious financial losses incurred which will affect the future viability of the centre and the loss to the horse industry in this region; and if he will make available substantial financial aid to the centre to overcome their present financial difficulties. [13932/01]

I am aware that many enterprises involved in, or associated with, agriculture and, indeed, many other sectors have been affected by the necessary restrictions which I put in place in order to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease. These restrictions are being lifted on a phased basis as circumstances allow. It is not intended to provide compensation to the horse sector or to any particular enterprise within the horse sector.
