Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Job Losses.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

127 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will report on recent job losses at a company (details supplied) in Dublin 11; the notice which her Department received regarding this closure; the reasons stated; and the assistance which her Department will provide to the workers seeking alternative employment. [14310/01]

The company informed my Department on 1 May 2001 of its intention to cease production in its Dublin facility on 31 May 2001 with the loss of 54 jobs. The company is engaged in CD replication for supply to major software manufacturers and has stated the following reasons for the closure of the Irish operation – over-capacity in Europe; fall in CD-ROM prices; and increases in the price of raw materials and operating costs. IDA Ireland has offered the company assistance in identifying suitable opportunities for alternative employment for staff. FÁS has also been in contact with the company to offer the assistance of its employment services unit.
