Vol. 536 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Age Cards.

Billy Timmins

Question:

111 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of national age cards which have been issued since the initiative was introduced by the Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15042/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that – as of Friday, 18 May 2001 – a total of 25,200 age cards had been issued since the commencement of the initiative. I am satisfied that the national voluntary age card scheme, in conjunction with specific provisions of the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2000, is of immense value in tackling the problem of under-age drinking.
