Vol. 536 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

112 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if Garda numbers have decreased within the Donegal division in recent years; the reason for the reduction in numbers in a Border county; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14567/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the manpower strength, all ranks, in the Donegal division was 434 on 1 January, 2001 and that local Garda management is satisfied that these resources are adequate to meet the present policing needs of the area.

The manpower strength, all ranks, in the division on 1 January 1998 was 440. I am assured that Garda manpower assigned to Donegal division is continually monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and the best possible Garda service is provided to the general public. The situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available the needs of the Donegal division will be fully con sidered by the Garda authorities within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
