Vol. 537 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Strength.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

181 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total membership of the Garda Síochána at the latest date for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15403/01]

I am informed by the Garda, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the total manpower strength of all ranks of the Garda Síochána as at 23 May 2001 is 11,656. Last year, the Government approved my proposals for the recruitment of 500 Garda trainees and the first of these trainees will commence training this year. I am pleased to say that this latest recruitment will fulfil the Government commitment to increase the strength of the Garda Síochána to a record 12,000 by 2002.
