Vol. 537 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teachers' Remuneration.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

202 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding recognition of increments at both primary and secondary school level for a person (details supplied) in England; his views on whether people with such qualifications should be encouraged to come back here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15388/01]

My Department recently agreed a revised scheme of incremental credit for teachers with the teacher unions and managerial authorities of primary and second level schools. The details of the agreement for primary teachers are outlined in circular 10/01. Recently a copy of this circular was sent to the teacher referred to by the Deputy.

If the teacher has further specific queries regarding the award of incremental credit he should contact the primary payments section of my Department directly in the matter.

This Government has introduced a number of measures to facilitate teachers trained abroad in obtaining teaching positions in Ireland. Teachers trained in EU countries employed in primary schools are now remunerated at the trained rate pending their obtaining the necessary competence in the Irish language. EU trained teachers now have up to five years to obtain the necessary competence in the language. In addition, for the period of two years from 1 September 2000, teachers trained outside the EU whose qualifications are accepted by my Department will be granted provisional recognition for five years on the same basis as EU trained teachers.
