Vol. 537 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cruise Liner Base.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

70 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the steps which have been taken to develop Ireland as a base for cruise liners; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15413/01]

As the Deputy may be aware Cruise Ireland, a marketing co-operative comprising representatives from the main Irish ports, Northern Ireland ports, Bord Fáilte, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, incoming tour operators, ship agents, retailers and some councils in Northern Ireland, was set up in 1994 to promote the island of Ireland as a destination for cruise liners.

I understand Cruise Ireland and various cruise related industries from Northern Ireland had a stand at the main cruise line convention, Seatrade, which takes place annually in Miami.

I am advised that 150 cruise liners are expected to call to Irish ports this year, 27 of which will be to Northern Ireland ports. This is an increase of almost 50% on last year. Dublin Port is the main port for cruise liners with 59 calls scheduled for 2001.
