The 2001 allocation of £8 million under the local improvement scheme – LIS – represents an increase of 33% on the 2000 allocation of £6 million and 167% on the 1997 allocation of £3 million. Sums of £3.948 million and £5 million, respectively, were allocated in 1998 and 1999. The considerable increased funding available in 2001 will enable county councils to make good progress in reducing the number of applications on hand. At the end of 2000 there were 4,651 applications on hand. The funds provided in 2000 enabled 913 schemes to be carried out of which 698 were fully completed and 215 partially completed.
Some 753.28 kilometers of non-public roads were improved in 2000 with a total of 3,487 beneficiaries.
