Vol. 537 No. 3

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

75 Ms Clune asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide details of his Department's involvement in a project (details supplied); the impact such a scheme will have in reducing packaging waste; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15905/01]

The select to re-use, sort to recycle project involves 20 schools in a pilot scheme under which pupils will recycle cardboard and milk cartons by making their own learning materials. The project has the potential to increase awareness of recycling and reuse not only among schoolchildren, but also among their parents and families as well as the wider community. It was identified as a desirable local environmental awareness initiative by three local authorities and received grant assistance totalling £8,000 from my Department's environmental partnership fund 2000. I am happy to support potentially worthwhile initiatives such as this and, accordingly, I also launched the project on 11 May 2001.
