Vol. 537 No. 3

Written Answers. - Price Controls.

Austin Currie

Question:

109 Mr. Currie asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action she intends to take to control the price of food given that a cabbage in a supermarket in west Dublin (details supplied) increased from 34p on 25 March 2001 to £1.29 on 10 May 2001; if she will seek an explanation for such price increases; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16332/01]

I do not intend to introduce statutory price controls in relation to food. Informed consumers, driving competition in the marketplace by shopping around for best value, provide the most effective guarantee against any unwarranted increase in prices.
