Vol. 537 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

140 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the extent to which he proposes to make funds available for the alleviation of flooding at the various blackspots which have been so affected in the past number of years; if he proposes to deal with the issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16293/01]

Moneys are made available annually by the Oireachtas in the Vote for the Office of Public Works towards an ongoing programme of drainage or flood alleviation schemes to enable the flooding problems in the various blackspot areas throughout the country to be tackled on a phased basis. While the Office of Public Works primarily use its powers under the Arterial Drainage Acts, 1945 and 1995, to carry out such drainage or flood relief schemes it also provides assistance to and co-operates with individual local authorities in the implementation of the respective authorities responsible to protect areas within their jurisdictional areas from flooding.
