Vol. 537 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Sports Stadium.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

4 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will give a guarantee that the facilities at campus Ireland will be accessible to the deprived and marginalised sections of the community at low charges; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16339/01]

It is the Government's intention that all the facilities planned for sports-campus Ireland at Abbotstown will be accessible, not only to elite athletes but to a wide range of sportsmen and women of all ages regardless of skill levels. The campus will also be a family destination in its own right providing a major leisure amenity for the local community as well as the general public.

While the campus will be operated on a commercial basis, Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Limited, the company currently responsible for overseeing the development of the project, will be negotiating a public policy requirement with the potential operator to ensure that the facilities will be available both to the national governing bodies of sport and to the wider community at a reasonable cost.

Questions Nos. 5 to 14, inclusive, answered orally.
