Vol. 537 No. 4

Written Answers. - Creatine Usage in Sport.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

39 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the steps he is taking to make sports people, especially young sportsmen and women, aware of recommendations from the Irish Sports Council that creatine should not be used, in view of concerns regarding its impact on health; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16202/01]

As I informed the House on 1 May, the Irish Sports Council has issued a press release stating that it does not support the use of creatine in sport. It has, in addition, issued a recommendation to athletes and players not to use the product. This recommendation is based on evidence of a number of short-term side effects associated with it, including muscle and gastrointestinal dysfunction and dehydration.
