Ruairí Quinn

Question:

45 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the latest position regarding discussions with the EU Commission on the details for the proposed URBAN II programme; when the appraisal being undertaken by the Commission will be conducted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16215/01]

The EU URBAN II Community Initiative Programme for Ireland was submitted to the EU Commission in November 2000. On 11 April the Commission confirmed that the draft programme was admissible with regard to the relevant EU regulation.

The Commission will now proceed with the appraisal process involving detailed discussions with the managing authority for the programme, Urban Ballyfermot Limited, with a view to having it approved by mid-summer.
The programme will provide funding of £8.5 million, of which 50% will be Exchequer funded, for the physical and social regeneration of Ballyfermot, Dublin.
