Vol. 537 No. 4

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

66 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 131 of 22 May 2001, he will review the payments made to fishermen in Cheekpoint, County Waterford in 1992 in view of further information (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16391/01]

As the Deputy is aware, Waterford Harbour Commissioners has been replaced as a corporate entity by the Port of Waterford Company. Having sought a full report in the matter from the port company, I outlined the position in detail to the Deputy in my replies to Parliamentary Questions answered on 1 May 2001 and 22 May 2001.

I have noted the further correspondence sent to me by the Deputy in relation to the committee representing the fishermen and licence holders during the relevant period. I have asked my Department to consult the relevant regional fisheries board responsible for licensing – the Southern Regional Fisheries Board – based on all the information furnished by the Deputy and the details given in my replies based on information provided by the Port of Waterford Company.

My Department will then review the position with the port company. However, I would not like to raise any false hopes in the matter as this is primarily a matter for decision by the port company as an independent commercial State company.
