Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers.

Liam Aylward

Question:

270 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the long waiting list for appointments with the Disabled Drivers Medical Board of Appeal by applicants under the disabled drivers and disabled passengers tax concessions scheme, 1994; the steps he proposes to take to rectify the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17161/01]

My Department has no involvement in the operation of the Disabled Drivers Medical Board of Appeal. However, I am informed that there is currently a backlog of appeals to be dealt with by the board. I understand that there are approximately 300 persons on the waiting list. This is an indication of the level of demand for tax relief under the scheme. In addition, the backlog seems to be exacerbated by the fact that many of those who appeal to the board are aware that they do not meet the medical criteria specified in the regulations but still insist on exercising their right of appeal. I understand that the board of appeal intends to increase the number of assessment sessions in the near future in an attempt to clear the current backlog.
