Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Question:

457 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans in place to develop the Grand Canal on the stretch from Bluebell to Clondalkin, Dublin 12; and if the plans include a cycle track. [16882/01]

Waterways Ireland, a North/South Implementation Body for inland waterways, was established on 2 December 1999 on foot of the British-Irish Agreement and was assigned the functions of management, maintenance, development and restoration of certain inland navigable waterways systems throughout the island, principally for recreational purposes. Any future developments on the canal system will be a matter for Waterways Ireland and accordingly the Deputy might wish to raise the matter directly with Waterways Ireland.
