Written Answers. - Disability Friendly Initiatives.

Billy Timmins

Question:

458 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the policy Dúchas has to assist disabled people to use the Wicklow Way or visit the Wicklow uplands; if she has received correspondence from the Equality Authority on the matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16933/01]

The Wicklow Way traverses mostly private property and includes a small section of the national park. Wicklow County Council is responsible for any matters relating to the Wicklow Way, other than that part passing through the national park for which my Department has responsibility. Similarly, my Department is not responsible for any areas of private property in the Wicklow uplands.

Every effort is made by my Department to facilitate disabled visitors to the Wicklow Mountains National Park, having at all times regard for conservation, the topography of the area and the safety of the users. Examples of disability friendly initiatives taken by me in the Wicklow Mountains National Park include the provision of board walking between the upper and lower lakes, refurbishment of Bolger's Cottage and proposals to refurbish Joseph's Cottage.

My Department has no record of receiving correspondence from the Equality Authority – An tÚdarás Comhionannais – on this matter.
