Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Dick Spring

Question:

474 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether it is appropriate that one of the images used on the Garda Síochána recruitment page on its web site is that of a shooter and a gun; his further views on the image thus created; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16607/01]

I presume the image referred to by the Deputy is that of a person with a firearm on a firing range.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the web site page in question, titled "Recruitment", refers to "student selection and training, promotion and development courses, and education within the service." The page ends with reference to specialist services within An Garda Síochána, which include ballistics and units to deal with armed terrorists and criminal gangs. The majority of members of the Garda Síochána have undergone firearms training.

Several images are used in the web site page and the image referred to by the Deputy illustrates just one aspect of the organisation and should not be taken in isolation.
