Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Conor Lenihan

Question:

534 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science the measures he is planning to inform parents of prospective pupils that a pre-school at the Model School for the Deaf will open in Cabra in September 2001; if he will be notifying the visiting teachers service of the opening in order that the parents involved will be made aware of this new service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16612/01]

Officials of my Department met with representatives of the Model School for the Deaf Project recently to finalise arrangements for the commencement of the pre-school in question. It has been agreed that the pre-school project will cater for up to six children and that it will operate on a pilot basis for an initial five year period.

It is a matter for individual parents to decide whether they wish their children to avail of this new development. My Department has advised the members of the visiting teacher service of the establishment of the pre-school.
