Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - ASTI Dispute.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

612 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which he is engaged in resolving the issues which caused industrial action by teachers during the past 12 months; his plans to attend to the fundamental issues involved; the date by which he expects to reach agreement on all or any of the outstanding issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17314/01]

The issues involved in the industrial action by members of the ASTI were examined in great detail by the Labour Court who issued recommendations for resolution of the dispute.

The ASTI rejected the Labour Court recommendations and have deferred consideration of future action on their 30% pay claim until September.

In the meanwhile my Department is in negotiation with the other teacher unions on the issues of supervision and substitution. Although the issues of supervision and substitution were highlighted during the dispute, the ASTI has refused to become involved in the present discussions.

It is hoped that negotiations on the supervision and substitution issues will be completed by mid-July.
