Vol. 538 No. 1

Written Answers. - Post-mortem Inquiry.

Bernard Allen

Question:

158 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Master of the Rotunda Hospital has warned that a post-mortem inquiry may not go ahead unless a number of key issues are resolved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17352/01]

On foot of a Government decision in April 2000, I have established a post-mortem inquiry under the chairmanship of Ms Anne Dunne, senior counsel.

I have seen the reported comments of the person referred to by the Deputy. One of the issues raised relates to the question of legal costs which may be incurred by persons assisting the inquiry. I have arranged for this matter to be examined by my Department in consultation with the Office of the Attorney General.

It is open to the person to raise with the inquiry the other concerns raised in the article.
