Vol. 538 No. 2

Written Answers. - Gun Safe Requirement.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

120 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the circumstances that gave rise to the introduction of a requirement that a gun safe be installed by the holders of firearms certificates, as a precondition to those certificates being renewed; the person or group who introduced this requirement; the authority under which it was introduced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17542/01]

I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that the requirements regarding gun safes, which were introduced last year by the Garda Síochána, are the subject of current High Court proceedings by way of judicial review. In the circumstances, the Deputy will appreciate that it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.
