Question:135 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will class Knockmenia national school, Ballymote, County Sligo, as disadvantaged; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17516/01]
Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Status.
The Deputy will be aware of the new disadvantaged programme, Giving Children an Even Break, which I launched on 4 January 2001. It will run over a three-year period and will cost £26 million. The programme involves the creation of 204 new primary teaching posts and the allocation of cash grants to over 2,300 primary schools in respect of disadvantaged pupils.
Schools invited to participate in the new programme were identified through a survey of educational disadvantage in primary schools carried out by the Educational Research Centre for my Department last year. Survey data were received from the school concerned on 21 May 2001. The position in relation to such schools is that the Educational Research Centre has been requested to examine their submissions and report to the Department, and that work is being finalised. The circumstances of these schools will be considered further when the report from the Educational Research Centre is received.
