Question:149 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of home-school-community liaison teachers in second level schools; and the numbers allocated each year since the inception of the scheme. [17582/01]

The home-school-community liaison scheme was introduced in second level schools in 1991. In that year, 8.27 wholetime teacher equivalents, WTE, were allocated to second level schools in respect of the home-school-community liaison scheme. The allocation was increased to 13 WTE in 1992, 18 WTE in 1993 and 25 WTE in 1994. In 1995, the allocation was further increased to 53.5 WTE, and this level of allocation continued up to 1998.
In 1999, all second level schools designated as disadvantaged were invited to participate in the home-school-community liaison scheme and 116 WTE were allocated to the schools concerned to facilitate their participation. A similar allocation has been made in respect of the home-school-community liaison scheme in the current school year.
