Vol. 538 No. 3

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

I propose to deal with a number of motions under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. I call on Deputy Quinn to state the matter of which he has given me notice.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention: the implications for our relationship with the European Union and the applicant states of the comments made by the Minister for Finance in Gothenburg on the outcome of the referendum on the Nice Treaty, the disarray in the Government in regard to policy towards the EU and the need for the Taoiseach to assert his authority and to ensure the Government speaks with one voice on this crucial issue.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following issue of public importance: the growing level of dissent within Government in relation to European Union policy, which is clearly intended to mislead the Irish electorate, and the necessity for the Government to immediately clarify its position regarding the holding of a further refer endum on the Nice Treaty, even though the document was rejected by the Irish people.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion. In regard to the second topic I call Deputy Naughten.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following matter of national importance: the implications of the announcement by Bank of Ireland that it intends to withdraw over the counter transactions such as lodgements and withdrawals and the threat which this poses to rural businesses and the security of elderly people who will be forced to hold their savings in their homes, and the action the Government intends to take to address this matter.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
