Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - Anti-Smoking Regulations.

Question:

211 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 305 of 15 May 2001, he will outline the action which can be taken against Dublin Bus for their failure to implement anti-smoking regulations on their services. [17761/01]

The correspondence from Dublin Bus supplied by the Deputy clearly outlines the difficulties in implementing non-smoking regulations on bus services operated by the company. Traditionally enforcement of non-smoking regulations has been carried out by appropriately authorised Dublin Bus personnel under its by-laws. The approach being taken by Dublin Bus to introduce plain clothes monitoring in this area is a very positive one and deserves our full support. I have made additional resources available to health boards this year to improve compliance with the law in this area and I will be asking the Eastern Regional Health Authority to contact Dublin Bus to see if they can be of assistance with its monitoring initiative.
