Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - Taxi Regulations.

Michael Ring

Question:

257 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when taxi licence fees were increased from £10 to £100 to have a licence continued in force in respect of another vehicle. [17739/01]

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles), Amendment, Regulations, 1995, as amended, provided for a default fee of £10 for the continuation in force of a taxi, wheelchair accessible taxi, hackney or limousine licence in respect of a different vehicle. Local licensing authorities applied this fee in the absence of exercising their discretionary power to set their own fee amounts.

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations, 2000, which were introduced on 21 November 2000, established new procedures to be followed when a licence holder wishes to transfer the licence to another vehicle, in the light of the introduction of the requirement for annual licence renewals. Under the new arrangements, where approval is given for the transfer, the licence will be deemed to have been renewed and the licence period will extend for a one year period from the approval-renewal date. The fee for the continuation in force of the licence under this process corresponds to the present licence renewal fee of £100.
