Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Station Facilities.

Alan Shatter

Question:

294 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress made to date in providing video recording systems in Garda stations; if he proposes the installation of video recording systems in prisoner reception areas and in cell areas as proposed by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors; the progress he envisages will be made by the end of 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17983/01]

The Garda authorities have informed me that the installation of audio/video recording facilities in approximately 220 interview rooms will meet their requirements. Approximately 150 Garda stations are involved. A major programme to install the necessary equipment will get under way shortly and I understand from the Garda authorities that they anticipate that the recording facilities will be provided at all the relevant locations before the end of the year. I am aware that proposals have been made for the installation of video recording facilities in the reception and cell areas of Garda stations. While this is a development I will bear in mind, my own view, at this stage, is that it would be better to have experience of the new audio/video arrangements currently being provided in relation to interviews before any decisions are taken regarding further recording.
