Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

303 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science if a school (details supplied) in County Donegal will be entitled to extra assistance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17671/01]

The staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on the 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners. The staffing warranted, at the school referred to by the Deputy, for the 2001-02 school year based on an enrolment of 171 pupils on 30 September 2000 is a principal and five mainstream class teachers. In addition, the school has the services of a concessionary post because of the school's disadvantaged status, a learning support teacher, a resource teacher and a home school liaison teacher.

The board of management recently wrote to the primary payments section of my Department stating that its projected enrolment in September 2001 will be 189 pupils. The board was advised in writing on 31 May 2001 that, based on this enrolment, it is not entitled to an additional post under maximum class size guidelines. An enrolment of 204 pupils on 30 September 2001 would entitle the school to an additional post for the 2001-02 school year.
