Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - United Nations Security Council.

Michael Noonan

Question:

103 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the meetings or events in which he intends to participate in connection with Ireland's membership of the United Nations Security Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13506/01]

With regard to my own participation in meetings related to Ireland's membership of the Security Council, it is my intention to visit New York during Ireland's Presidency of the council in October and to play an active role in the work of the council in that period.

I visited New York in February this year in conjunction with Ireland's membership of the Security Council and I will be there again in September for the opening of the UN General Assembly. Since we joined the council I have held a wide range of bilateral consultations both with other members of the Security Council and with non-members on issues on the SECCO agenda and it is my intention to maintain this consultative approach throughout the two years of our membership.
