162 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development when funding for the Leader+ programme will be approved; the reason for the delay in approving this funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17821/01]
The EU Commission examination of the draft Leader+ operational programme has progressed through a number of procedural stages and my Department is in close discussion with a view to conclusion and securing approval of the programme as soon as possible. EU Commission approval of the Leader+ programme will also clear the way for commencement of the Leader national rural development programme.
The process of selecting local rural development groups to deliver Leader activity is proceeding contemporaneously. When the selection process is complete I will report to Government and the appointment of the appropriate number of groups will be decided by Government.
