Vol. 538 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Regulations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

136 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the regulations covering vehicles used for transporting cars; if he has satisfied himself that these regulations are adequate to ensure public safety on the roads; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18470/01]

The Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963 to 2000 govern the use of vehicles, including vehicle transporters, in public places. Relevant safety standards applied under these regulations relate inter alia to maximum dimensions, overall vehicle weight and axle weight limits and fitment of speed limiters. Periodic roadworthiness testing also applies to vehicle transporters under separate regulations.

I am not aware of specific concerns regarding the adequacy of this regulatory regime in relation to vehicle transporters. I will, however, consider any such concerns that may be brought to my attention.
