Vol. 538 No. 5

Written Answers. - Early School Leavers.

Question:

163 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the avenues open to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 regarding school attendance problems. [18425/01]

My Department would ideally prefer if young people who have left school prematurely would return to full-time education, in this case to complete the leaving certificate. The school which the person in question had attended would be delighted to take him back, or alternatively, my Department would be prepared to assist in placing him in another school.

In terms of options available through the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, these are: a full-time senior cycle course with another school in the area or at the discretion of the VEC, an evening leaving certificate programme in a VEC college. If the person concerned, or his parents, contact the City of Dublin VEC, they will be happy to discuss matters and facilitate a suitable placement.
