Written Answers. - Health and Safety in Schools.

Question:

166 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the regulations which apply in relation to health and safety in primary schools; the way in which this is monitored; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18434/01]

The Health and Safety Authority is the body with national responsibility for health and safety matters in the workplace. Under the health and safety legislation, school managerial authorities in their role as employers are responsible for providing a safe environment for all personnel present in the school. This duty requires the drawing up of a safety statement for the school. The statement should identify potential hazards, assess the risks to health and safety and put appropriate provision in place to safeguard the safety and health of employees and pupils. The safety statement should be reviewed on a regular basis.

In 1996 the Health and Safety Authority issued a report of the advisory committee on occupational safety and health at first and second level schools. The committee included representatives of the partners in education, my Department and other interests. The report contains a recommended format for a safety statement for schools. Copies of the report are available from the Health and Safety Authority.
