Vol. 538 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

174 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve an application for a concessionary teacher at a school (details supplied) in County Cork. [18474/01]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. The number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners.

The enrolment at the school in question was 368 pupils on 30 September 2000. This enrolment will entitle the school to a staffing of a principal and 13 mainstream class teachers for the 2000-2001 school year.

The board of management was advised in writing on 13 June 2001 that they would be granted an additional post if the projected enrolment on 30 September 2001 was at least 400 pupils. If the board feels that it will have this projected enrolment it should notify the primary payments section of my Department in writing.

The school has the services of a learning support teacher, a full-time and a shared resource teacher which it will retain for the 2001-2002 school year.

If the school requires additional resource teaching support for pupils with special needs an application should be forwarded to my Department through the inspectorate.
