Vol. 538 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

177 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if a teacher on a post-leaving certificate course requires a higher diploma in education in order to obtain eligible part-time status; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18477/01]

In order to be appointed as an EPT in a fully qualified capacity in a voluntary secondary, community or comprehensive school, a person must hold an acceptable training-in-teaching qualification – the higher diploma in education or equivalent – in addition to an acceptable primary degree or equivalent. A training-in-teaching qualification is not a requirement for appointment to a post in the vocational sector.
