Question:

82 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Defence if the military authorities are considering deploying the Mowag Pirhana armoured personnel carriers to the UN mission in Eritrea-Ethiopia; the number of APCs he is contemplating deploying; the persons who will crew these vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 64 and 82 together.

As I indicated in my reply to Priority Questions Nos. 1, 4 and 5 today, it is proposed that a military team will undertake a fact-finding visit to Ethiopia and Eritrea at an early date in connection with the possible deployment of a contingent of the Permanent Defence Force for service with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea – UNMEE – with effect from December 2001. The question of what equipment will be required will, inter alia, be determined during the course of the visit.

Question No. 65 answered with Question No. 24.
