Question:

81 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Defence the locations at which he proposes to garage the 40 armoured personnel carries when they are delivered; when the military authorities identified the necessity for garaging facilities to him; the reason such garaging facilities will not be completed before the final delivery date of these vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17650/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 66 and 81 together.

With the expansion of the Army transport fleet in general additional garaging facilities are being provided at the Defence Forces training centre in the Curragh Camp. A consultant was appointed to advise on the requirements in September 2000. Tenders have recently been received for these facilities and are currently with the consultant for evaluation. It is expected that the works will commence in September 2001 and will be completed in April of next year. In the meantime, an enclosed security compound is used for the protection of vehicles as required.

Financial provision has been made to ensure the provision of the garaging facilities is completed on time. The Deputies will appreciate, of course, that by their nature, Defence Forces vehicles are generally in use and are garaged for the minimum period.
