Vol. 538 No. 5

Written Answers. - EU Funding.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

114 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the amount of funding which has been provided to the Government from the European Union for agricultural purposes in each of the past ten years; if this level of funding will continue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18430/01]

The following table sets out the amounts paid from the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund – EAGGF – to Ireland over the years 1991 to 2000.

The Berlin European Council of March 1999 decided on the financial framework for the EU for the years 2000 to 2006. In light of that framework, I expect that the annual average level of payments to Ireland from the EAGGF will remain at least at the level of recent years. I should add that market support payments from the EU, that is, for intervention purchases and export refunds, tend to be higher when markets are weaker and lower when markets are strong.
