Vol. 539 No. 2

Written Answers. - Post Office Network.

Jim Higgins

Question:

71 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the number of post offices and sub-post offices which have closed since 1997; and the locations of same. [19261/01]

The present Government policy in relation to post offices is that there should be no closures. However, vacancies within the network do arise as a result of illness, death or retirement. In such cases An Post advertises the post at least twice and actively canvasses for suitable persons to fill the vacant positions. It is only when a suitable candidate for a vacancy cannot be found that a post office is closed on a temporary basis pending an application from such a person. A total of 98 post offices have closed temporarily since 1997 and the dates of closure and locations, as provided to me by the company, are as follows:

Question:

73 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has received any response from the banks regarding her request that they would subsidise post offices; and, if so, the content of the responses received. [19263/01]

The interdepartmental group, which I established following the publication of the Flynn review of the sub-post office network is at present examining the issues involved in the long-term viability of the network. As part of their work, they are considering the question of a role for, and contribution from, the banking sector towards the long-term future of the post office network. The group is due to report to me next month.
