Vol. 539 No. 2

Written Answers. - Broiler Chickens.

John Gormley

Question:

86 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his proposals to deal with the question of intensive broiler rearing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19173/01]

Broiler rearing is subject to the general rules contained in Directive 98/58/EU which deal with the protection of animals kept for farming purposes.

I expect that the Commission will table proposals in the near future on this issue following on from its adoption of a report entitled The Welfare of Chickens Kept for Meat Production (Broilers) from the Scientific Committee on Animal Health and Welfare.

I am prepared to contribute constructively to discussions at EU level for further rules on the welfare of broiler chickens.
