Vol. 539 No. 2

Written Answers. - Economic Growth.

Ivor Callely

Question:

95 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the influence the European Union has had on current economic success here; the likely influence in the years ahead; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18379/01]

Ireland's membership of the EU is one of many factors which have contributed to our current economic success. Being part of this major economic bloc has given us access to huge markets and this, in turn, has been a driving force behind business investment and employment growth. These influences will continue to provide a basis for future progress. More directly, funding received under the Common Agricultural Policy has improved the living standards of the farming community while EU Structural and Cohesion Funds have underpinned a substantial improvement in Ireland's infrastructure.
