Vol. 539 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Ulick Burke

Question:

98 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will provide financial assistance towards the cleaning of the Woodford River; if he will co-operate with other public and private agencies sharing the area of this river plain; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19446/01]

The Woodford River in County Galway is located in the fisheries region of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board. The Shannon board is of the opinion that the river has excellent potential for tourism and recreational angling and recognises that the various public and private sector stakeholders all have a role to play in achieving the potential of the river. I would ask any local stakeholders with proposals for the catchment area of the river to contact the chief executive officer of the Shannon board.

For its part the Shannon board undertakes to submit an application for funding of fisheries development measures relating to the river under the angling development programme of the National Development Plan 2000 to 2006.
