Vol. 539 No. 3

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

153 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children if on the basis of referrals to private orthodontists in the Eastern Regional Health Authority area in the past 12 months, he expects a substantial reduction in the numbers awaiting orthodontic treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19510/01]

The provision of orthodontic treatment is the responsibility of the health boards in the first instance. The use of the services of private orthodontists and the recruitment of additional staff are part of the orthodontic initiative to increase the numbers in treatment. This initiative coupled with the structural changes being introduced in the orthodontic services will, I am convinced, secure the delivery of an effective orthodontic service in the Eastern Regional Health Authority.

Question No. 154 answered with Question No. 148.
