Vol. 539 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

200 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will ensure that a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary receives one to one tuition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19528/01]

I am aware of the pupil referred to by the Deputy.

My Department's inspectorate, in October 2000, assessed this pupil's need for resource teaching support following an application from the school in which she is enrolled. Following consideration of this application, the school authorities were notified that the pupil in question did not meet with my Department's criteria for resource teaching under circular 8/99 but that she should continue to receive support from the remedial teacher who serves the school.

The school authorities requested a review of my Department's decision in May 2001. This review has now been completed and the school authorities were recently notified that the initial decision has been upheld. I have been informed that the pupil in question continues to receive support from the remedial teacher.

The school may re-apply for support for this pupil in the event of additional professional reports concerning her educational needs being made available to my Department's inspectorate.
