Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Denis Naughten

Question:

184 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the delay in receiving a response to Parliamentary Question No. 235 of 22 May 2001; when a response will be furnished; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20395/01]

The information requested by the Deputy is not routinely collected by my Department. Therefore my Department has again requested the regional chief executive of the authority and the chief executive officers of the health boards to compile the information requested and forward it to the Department and to the Deputy, as a matter of urgency.

John McGuinness

Question:

185 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, has postponed on three occasions an operation for a person (details supplied) in County Carlow; the reason the last cancellation was conveyed to the family at 10.10 p.m. the night before this person was due to be admitted; his views on the fact that the reason given was that there were no beds and only one anaesthetist; and the steps he can take to correct this situation and expedite the operation for this person. [20419/01]

The Deputy will appreciate that the scheduling of hospital admissions is solely a matter for the relevant hospital to determine based upon clinical priority. I have asked the chief executive officer at the South Eastern Health Board, who has responsibility for the provision of services in the case to which the Deputy is referring, to look into the matter and reply directly to him as a matter of urgency.
