Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

John Bruton

Question:

202 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if e.coli 0157 has been identified in water supplies here; and the precautions he is taking to ensure e.coli 0157 induced deaths and illnesses do not occur in rural communities served by group water schemes. [20599/01]

John Bruton

Question:

208 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has made special arrangements to keep himself informed of the proceedings of the O'Connor Tribunal in Ontario, Canada, investigation into the deaths of several people from e.coli 0157 poisoning through the public water supply in Walkertown, Ontario, so as to ensure that all relevant lessons are learned in order to prevent a similar tragedy here. [20633/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 202 and 208 together.

I refer to the replies to Question No. 159 of Thursday 24 May, and to Questions Nos. 80 and 92 of 3 July. The position remains unchanged.

Officials of my Department and of the Environmental Protection Agency remain generally informed of relevant developments in relation to drinking water quality and in that regard will be keeping developments in relation to contamination of drinking water supplies by e.coli 0157 in Ontario under review.
