Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Postpersons Safety.

Joe Higgins

Question:

315 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the numerous attacks on postpersons in greater Blanchardstown area in the course of their duties; and the measures he will take to insure the safety of postpersons in their work. [20815/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that two incidents involving postpersons have been reported in the Blanchardstown area for the year 2001 to date. The first incident, which occurred on 19 February 2001, involved the theft of post by a person in possession of an offensive weapon. The second incident occurred on 25 April 2001 and involved the theft of post and a bicycle, the latter of which was recovered. I understand that both these incidents are under investigation.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that members of the Garda Síochána are aware of the possibility of these types of incidents occurring and that regular attention is afforded to postpersons during their rounds.
